Costa Rica has become one of the first 10 countries in the world, and the first of Latin America, to sign a Memorandum Of Understanding (MoU) for the conservation of migratory sharks, during the Third Meeting for International Cooperation on Migratory Sharks under the Convention of Migratory Species (February 8-12, 2010, Manila, Philipines). CMS’s Press Release.
The MoU has been subject to an over 2 year process, where Costa Rica has played an important role as a member of an interim team to draft it. By signing this Agreement, the countries expressed their willingness and commitment to conserve highly migratory sharks.
Pretoma would like to congratulate the Costa Rican authorities for attaining this important goal, and encourages the country to continue exerting its natural leadership in these international forums to eventually attain the international conservation of sharks.
